Mrs Detour's 7th grade students made board games demonstrating the knowledge they learned regarding Maine forestry and lumber.

Our 5th grade artists have been busy getting their hands messy and their creativity flowing with sculpture! Students are learning about artist Augusta Savage through our class read-aloud, "Find Your Way" by Cassie Stephens. Working in small groups, they read and mix a recipe to make their own clay before creating sculptures. Next, we’ll compare our homemade clay to a store-bought clay!

The fifth-grade class completed part two of their lesson on mixtures and solutions. Today, they combined the gravel, powder, and salt with water to test whether a screen or filter paper can separate the mixtures.

The 5th grade class has started a new science lesson on mixtures and solutions. Today, they investigated the color, texture, particle size, and particle shape of gravel, powder, and salt.

Mystery shapes have arrived in our classroom with a challenge for the students to draw the mystery shape, find the measurements to the nearest inch, 1/4 or 1/2 inch, and determine the shapes perimeters. This was a fun and an engaging way to review this week’s math lessons.

They continued to practice using measurement tools such as rulers and meter sticks where appropriate to measure the length of the classroom, the distance of their 2 foot jumps and the distance they can blow a pattern block.

Food Pantry Today Thursday March 19th at 3:00pm

Join us Wednesday, March 25th 5:00-6:30pm at Katahdin Elementary for our Family Math Night. Participate in interactive math games with your favorite KES students.

Light snacks and beverages will be available. Every child will bring a door prize home and parents will be entered in to a raffle for the grand prize.

Morning work is about engaging students with critical thinking that wakes them up to start the day. These cereal box puzzle help do just that. Grade 3 students persevered though some tricky situations to become successful in the end. What a great way to start a Monday after a few days off. 😊

Katahdin High School students recently presented their STEM Fair projects on a variety of topics. As part of the process, students developed a hypothesis, conducted an experiment, collected and analyzed data, and displayed their results to determine whether their hypothesis was supported.

Our 4th grade students recently wrote persuasive essays and had the opportunity to share them with the principal. They did an excellent job making their cases on topics such as “Hunting on Sundays,” “Why Playing Basketball Is the Best,” and “Why Schools Should Have a Class Pet.” The students presented thoughtful arguments and demonstrated great persuasive writing skills!

Today was the big reveal! We finally discovered who our Mystery Readers were.

There will be NO ASP on Monday March 9th or Tuesday, March 10th due to a staff meeting and Student Led Conferences. Wednesday March 11th there is no regular school for KES students due to Student Led Conferences. March 12 & 13 there is no school due to Teacher Workshops.

This week at KES, we’ve been enjoying our Mystery Readers! Students have had a great time trying to guess who the Mystery Readers are. On Friday, the Mystery Readers will finally be revealed. 📚✨

These 3rd grade students embraced the job as a ‘peer editor’ today to help strengthen each other’s writing stories. They politely suggested edits and accepted feedback.

To celebrate Read Across America and Dr. Seuss’s birthday, elementary students welcomed special guest readers to the school to share some of their favorite stories. This week is also “Mystery Reader” week, when a staff member dresses in costume and a story is read to the students in a mystery voice. Students try to guess the reader’s identity, with the big reveal happening on Friday. To add to the celebration, students also enjoyed birthday cake at lunch in honor of Dr. Seuss.
