Grade three has been studying the structures of crayfish. We’ve been very observant and discovered their appearance, behaviors and interactions impact how they survive.

The RSU 89 Food Pantry will be open Thursday, May 21st from 3:00-4:00 for our final pantry day until September. We have received a large amount of fresh produce to share with families!

Please note that while produce is plentiful, the selection of other pantry items is very limited at this time and will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Monday, the 5th grade class went on a field trip to Cole Land Transportation Museum. It was a fun and informational day that brought history to life for our students. Students learned so much about Maine's early pioneers and inventors. Students also had the opportunity to see how vehicles, trains, bikes, and farming equipment have transformed through the years.

Middle and High School students got to receive a visit from MMTA (Maine Motor Transportation Association). They received hands-on experiences inside a 50 foot trailer of different career opportunities in the Big Ole Trucking World. Students were able to sit in a truck simulator and actually drive in multiple weather conditions, many distraction options, and needed to understand the importance of CDL driving. They received education for when they could go for the CDL and some scholarship/grant opportunities that could be available to them. They also had the chance to try out a VR Forklift and that was a challenge! There was also a video simulator that allowed them to tear apart a truck in detail (as far as taking individual nuts and bolts off tires) and then piecing it together.

These kids had fun learning and we appreciate Derek from MMTA providing this service to students all over the State of Maine. Feel free to view their website for more information: MMTA - Tonka

"The three-year project will cost $1.9 million in total, with the federal WORC grant providing $1.2 million or 64 percent of the cost. The remaining $715,328, or 36 percent, will come from the school districts, which have varied sources of funding, and other grants secured by the nonprofit partners."

NEOC (New England Outdoor Center) was a fascinating trip to take and learn about all the different experiences you can get right from our own backyard. Whether it be housekeeping, cooking a pizza and the sanitization behind it, or even the marketing that comes behind all the awesome posts that you see on facebook! These girls got to experience every department they could be employed in some day and make a lifelong career out of while also learning about some basic survival skills!

Although some may seem like such small opportunities, they add up to helping develop careers at this location and help keep it growing. Let me add, which then helps grow the communities even more...keep an eye out as they will be adding some additional cabins within the year!

UMA Healthcare Bootcamp was a SUCCESS!!! Students got to try out different career paths that are in Healthcare, Vet Tech and Dental. It was eye opening to see all of the breakdowns of the departments and what you can study independently within. There were 9 stations and the girls got to choose 3 of their interests. So on top of education, they had a chance to branch off and have that independence to meet new people. They learned about Sickle Cell Disease and its study, how to bandage wounds, deal with emergency care with animals, how to properly place a filling on a tooth and so much more! Some girls left sure of what they wanted to do and others more confused. BUT, that is what exploring is all about right?! Finding your niche, and these 6 girls got to expand their thinking into their futures.

Katahdin Higher Education Center wrote a beautiful article also and you can read that here AND see some more photos of our kiddos: Healthcare Bootcamp Article

Sometimes life gets crazy and so much is going on that pictures are not a thought. This event was one of those days! From setting up tables, to getting BINGO cards together, to gift baskets, decorating and making sure things run smoothly, we just didn't have a phone on us, so thankfully our amazing GearUP Rep, Jesse Page, shared some shots. Which works out great because GearUP needs a shoutout also for providing the amazing baskets that were won! THANK YOU GEARUP!!! I would also like to thank ALL of the colleges and businesses that attended!

Eastmill FCU, Army National Guard, Katahdin Trust, Husson, Patten Fire Dept, UMPI, OSI, Mt. Chase Lodge, DHHS, True Connections, Katahdin Learning Project, Forest Services, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Mitchell's Helping Hands, College of the Atlantic, UMFK, CMCC, EMCC, Thomas College and more that I am sure I am missing. But we thank you!!! We are so grateful you could join our students and expand their minds with opportunities! Reports from the students came back great and we are thankful that many wanted to bring parents during their Student Led Conference!

Although this was the only picture I was able to take due to photo restrictions. These two young men, sitting in the Kings chairs, got to enjoy the Johnson Outdoors Facility and see the many opportunities that lie within the buildings right there in Orono! They joined other surrounding schools in the Moosehead/Katahdin Region to explore Marketing, Production and how Engineering is incorporated into making Kayaks and Canoes. They spoke with employees about their positions and how long they have been there. Many started right out of high school and there for 38 years and no plans of retirement!!!

In the Production section, they were able to walk through each assembly line, step by step, to see how they make a kayak and the job openings that are there. In Marketing, they were told of the many positions from film, photography, editing, creator and more. Did I mention they get to travel to France for work?!? Engineering plays a big part in the Kayak and Canoes, they develop the next big thing or how to make something better through design. Johnson Outdoors was amazing to visit and these two learned a lot in the day, so much so that they were fed pizza!

We also learned a fun fact while we were there that Brian from Maine Outdoor Brands wanted to be sure to point out. We got to see all the BEAUTIFUL woodwork for canoes that comes right here from Patten that Dri-Ki Woodworking supplies for Johnson Outdoors Canoes. Amazing what we have here in our own backyards and these two got to realize that!
